The Second Vatican Council: Understanding the Ideas and Implications of the Greatest Meeting in History

  • St. Michael the Archangel 424 Southwest Mill Street Portland, OR, 97201 United States (map)

The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) is one of the most pivotal events of the last hundred years -- a great spiritual renewal still being unpacked today. As Catholics in the United States, we are often aware that we started celebrating the Mass in English after Vatican II, but we are not always informed about the shape and impact of this dynamic ecumenical council. In this series, we provide an overview of the Council, and we look specifically at the Council's teachings on the nature of our faith tradition and the mission of the Church -- taking into account its impact on our mission as well! What precipitated the Council? What are its key documents? Why are people in the Church concerned about it today? Which teachings are important for us to know? And why, after all, does it matter for us?

Session 1: Introduction to Vatican II

Session 2: Scripture, Tradition, and Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum)

Session 3: The Church and Our Mission Today (Lumen Gentium)
